Managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes require daily monitoring of your blood glucose levels through a glucose meter. Your doctor will also recommend that you regulate your diet and get appropriate exercise, since these will help to regulate your blood
sugar and keep it close to normal levels all day.
To learn how to monitor your blood glucose levels properly using a glucose meter, talk to your diabetes educator. He or she will be able to show you how to use your glucose meter and how to prepare to take a blood glucose reading.
Apart from the daily monitoring and managing of your diabetes, your doctor will also give you a hemoglobin A1c test (HbA1c test) to measure your blood sugar control over time to see how effectively you are managing your blood sugar levels on a daily basis. The HbA1c test is given every 2 to 3 months.
When monitored and managed properly, you can preven further long-term complications of diabetes. These complications include heart, kidney, eye, and nerve damage.
